On Memorial Day, at long last, we dedicated the Honor Bell. In a ceremony at Fort Logan National Cemetery the bell was tolled for the first time where it will serve to honor the service and sacrifice of our veterans. A flag line was provided by the Colorado Chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders, and a number of veteran support groups were present including Rolling Thunder and Brotherhood of Veterans. Tony Kovaleski of KMGH Channel 7 emceed the event, with speeches from foundation executive director Louis Olivera, Daniels Fund CEO Linda Childears, and Verdin Company marketing manager Bob Santoro, among others. The bell's first tolling at Fort Logan was conducted by the Bell Honor Guard, with artifact donor, and Gold Star father, Dr. Jeff Falkel serving as the ceremonial belladier to toll the bell.
After the bell's inaugural tolling, the foundation presented each of the families, who donated a veteran's artifact to the Honor Bell, with a small bell-shaped memento. Cast from the same bronze used to forge the bell, each memento was inscribed with the details of the veteran's service, the artifact donated, and the bell's casting date and number.
The Honor Bell will now enter into service at Fort Logan National Cemetery when requested by families of veterans who will be interred there. If you wish to request a tolling for your loved one, notify your funeral director, send an email to email@example.com, or call 720.282.9182.
