Honoring a Pearl Harbor Sailor

This morning the Honor Bell was tolled to lay to rest US Navy Storekeeper 3rd Class, Wallace Eakes. Wallace was 22 years old on December 7, 1941, and was serving aboard the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor.  He was killed in action.

Eakes and 99 other sailors were buried in a mass grave, but thanks to recent technology their remains have been identified and returned home.  Mr. Eakes was interred at Fort Logan National Cemetery after a lovely memorial service where his nephew, Gary Eakes, was presented with the flag by Rear Admiral Jackie McClellan. Eakes was accompanied by his sister, Janice Cope. They are SK3 Eakes' last remaining family members.

In addition to a Navy team, the Honor Bell Foundation, Patriot Guard Riders and All Veterans Honor Guard honored Mr. Eakes.
